What a sale costs you

Two fees come out of each sale: BookFunnel’s platform fee, which depends on your BookFunnel plan, and the card network fee. Sales tax is separate: by default the reader pays it on top of your price.

Tax is left out. “You cover the fee” is the default. On a Mid-List plan you can instead have the reader pay a Service fee, here the most the plan allows; on a Bestseller plan the reader can pay the entire fee, so you keep your whole price.

The network fee is an estimate. It is 2.9% + $0.30 of what the reader’s card is charged, and some cards cost more.
On a Bestseller plan the reader can pay the entire fee; card costs above the 2.9% + $0.30 estimate stay with you.
Platform fees are BookFunnel’s and are subject to change. Publisher plans pay Bestseller Author rates for now.
First-Time Author accounts can’t pass the fee to the reader, and can’t use the sales-tax options. Upgrading your BookFunnel plan unlocks both.
Sales tax is separate. BookFunnel is the merchant of record: the tax is worked out at checkout, collected from the reader and filed by BookFunnel.
A tax-inclusive price means you cover the entire fee. If you choose “Buyer’s final price equal to listed price”, the reader pays exactly your price, tax included, and no Service fee is added.
How the figures are worked out. Each fee is rounded to the cent on its own. The platform fee is your plan’s percentage of the price, rounded, plus its fixed amount; the network fee is 2.9% of what the card is charged, rounded, plus $0.30.

Refunds and chargebacks

Refunds: no fee: There’s no fee for refunding an order.
Chargeback fees: passed through: $30 to $60 a chargeback, depending on the card used.
Chargeback forgiveness: Each calendar month, some chargebacks’ fees are forgiven: none on First-Time Author, 1 on Mid-List Author, 2 on Bestseller Author. A forgiven chargeback’s fee isn’t passed on to you.

A chargeback also reverses the sale. The reader’s bank takes the money back, and the order is refunded, the reader’s Service fee included. Forgiveness covers the chargeback fee, not the sale amount.
